Power of Attorney for Marriage in the UAE: How It Works

A marriage power of attorney (POA) lets someone you trust act for you at a UAE marriage registration when you cannot be there. That might be a groom working offshore, a bride whose father lives abroad, or a partner stuck on another continent. The document has to be a special power of attorney, limited to marriage and matched to the registration track you chose. A generic POA is the most common reason agents get turned away at the counter.
This guide explains what the document is, who can use it, what it must say, how long it stays valid and which mistakes cost couples weeks.
TL;DR
A marriage POA is a special power of attorney. It must be limited to marriage and name the person and the process (Sharia court or civil), not a general mandate.
It lets an agent represent you in procedures. It does not replace your consent: the marriage contract still needs documented consent from both parties.
For Muslim marriages, a POA is most often used when the bride’s guardian (the Wali) cannot attend and appoints a proxy. For non-Muslim civil marriages, no guardian is needed, but an adult can still appoint an agent for the paperwork.
State the powers clearly (sign the contract, collect the certificate) and set an expiry date. UAE notary rules do not allow more than three years.
If the POA is issued abroad, expect notarization, foreign ministry authentication and attestation by the UAE embassy before it counts here.

What a marriage power of attorney actually is
A marriage POA is a written authority in which a principal (the bride, the groom or the bride’s guardian) appoints an agent to handle marriage-related steps on their behalf. In UAE practice it falls under the Special Power of Attorney category, which means it covers marriage and nothing else. The agent cannot use it to sign a lease, sell a car or open a bank account, and a general mandate drafted for those things generally cannot be used for a marriage.
The legal footing is the personal status framework. Federal Decree-Law No. 41 of 2024 on the Personal Status Law treats marriage as a contract that depends on the presence and consent of the parties, and personal status rules in the UAE allow representation by a proxy. Legal capacity to marry starts at 18, and a person who is sane and at least 18 can appoint an agent for marriage-related documentation.
Two points sit underneath everything else:
Consent cannot be delegated. The agent carries out procedure. The marriage contract must still contain documented proof that both parties agree to marry each other. A POA signed by someone who has not consented, or who does not know who they are marrying, is not a valid foundation.
Specificity beats length. Clerks examine the wording. A short document that says exactly what it needs to say is more useful than a long general one.
Who needs one, and who does not
The bride’s guardian in an Islamic marriage
For Muslim marriages, the bride’s guardian (Wali) is required to be present. When he is abroad, ill or otherwise unable to attend, he can appoint a proxy through a power of attorney, and that proxy gives consent at the court on his behalf. This is the situation behind many searches for a “POA for marriage”: a father in another country who needs to authorize a relative or representative in the UAE.
If this is your case, read our guide on marriage consent rules in the UAE before you draft anything. The wording depends on who is giving consent and for whom.
A bride or groom who cannot attend
Sometimes one of the couple cannot be in the UAE on the day, for example because of work abroad, a visa gap or a travel ban. A POA can authorize an agent to handle the application, sign the paperwork and collect the certificate. Whether this works for your case depends on the track. Some registries expect you to appear in person for the contract itself. Confirm this with the specific court or registry before you spend money on a document.

Non-Muslim civil marriages
In a civil marriage between non-Muslims, a guardian is not required. The couple are adults with their own legal capacity. A POA here is a convenience tool: it lets an agent file documents, submit applications and collect papers. It does not remove the need for the parties’ consent, and civil registration still follows its own procedure. See our step-by-step marriage registration walkthrough for how that process runs.
Who does not need one
If both of you and any required guardian can attend, you do not need a POA. Adding one only creates another document to get wrong. Couples who simply want help with paperwork can usually hire a service to prepare and submit documents with them present, rather than going through a proxy.
What the document must say
Court clerks scrutinize these documents closely, so wording matters. A workable marriage POA includes:
Full names and identity details of the principal and the agent, exactly as they appear on passports or Emirates IDs.
The intended spouse’s name, so the mandate points at a specific marriage.
The registration track: Sharia court (Islamic marriage) or civil marriage. A POA drafted for one track is likely to be rejected by the other, because the two operate under different frameworks.
A statement that the power is special and limited to marriage. Leaving this out can make the document useless for registration.
The specific acts the agent may perform. At minimum, authority to sign the marriage contract and to collect the marriage certificate. Clerks treat these as separate authorities. If the document is silent on collection, the agent may have to come back with an updated or new mandate.
An expiry date. More on this below.
If you take one thing away: don’t save a general POA you already hold and hope it covers marriage. UAE registries ask for a special power that names the intended spouse and the process.
How to get one, step by step
Decide your registration track. Islamic marriage at the court or civil marriage. Everything else follows from this.
Draft the scope. List the acts: file the application, sign the contract, collect the certificate. Name the spouse and track.
Take the draft to a notary public. In the UAE, a notary public or the relevant justice department attests the document. The principal normally appears with ID. Remote notarization is available in some emirates for eligible users, usually verified through UAE Pass. Check your emirate’s current service before you rely on this.
Check the expiry and fees. Fees vary by emirate and by the notary channel. One commonly cited figure for marriage POAs is AED 100 for each year of validity, but confirm the current fee with the notary before you go.
Hand the original to your agent. Keep copies. Agents are usually asked to present the original at the court or registry.
Verify with the registry. Before the appointment, ask whether the court or registry accepts your POA for your particular marriage, and what documents the agent must bring in addition.
The UAE’s Ministry of Justice has also introduced a digital POA system, and since its second phase launched in June 2023 customers can generate ratified POAs online. Not every registry or marriage track necessarily treats a digitally generated mandate the same way, so ask before relying on one.
If you are abroad: the attestation chain
A POA signed outside the UAE has to be recognized here, and that takes steps. The usual chain is:
Notarization in the country where you sign.
Authentication by that country’s foreign ministry (or equivalent authority).
Attestation by the UAE embassy or consulate in that country.
If needed, further checks once the document arrives in the UAE, including translation into Arabic where the receiving entity requires it.
Some countries have digital attestation routes at the UAE embassy, and rules differ by country, so check the embassy’s page for the country where you are. Allow extra time. Couples often plan a wedding date and then discover the attestation took longer than the flight would have. If you are in the UAE and need help with documents that must be attested, our marriage certificate attestation service handles that stage.
How long is a marriage POA valid?
Do not leave the validity open-ended. A POA should carry a specific expiry date, and under notary requirements it cannot run longer than three years from the date of issue. A longer period risks immediate rejection by the notary or the court.
In practice, shorter is better. Choose a validity that covers your realistic timeline with a buffer, since a document that expires before the appointment is worthless. A few months is enough for most weddings. If delays hit, issue a new one rather than gambling on a borderline date.
Mistakes that get agents turned away
Mistake | Why it fails | Fix |
Using a general POA | Marriage requires a special, limited mandate | Draft a marriage-specific POA |
Not naming the spouse or track | Clerks cannot verify what is being authorized | Name both the spouse and the process |
Silence on collecting the certificate | Signing and collecting are separate authorities | List both acts explicitly |
Wrong track (Sharia vs civil) | The two follow different legal frameworks | Confirm track first, then draft |
No expiry, or more than three years | Notary or court rejects it | Set a clear date inside the limit |
Foreign-signed POA without attestation | Not recognized in the UAE | Complete notarization, authentication and embassy attestation |
Treating the POA as consent | Consent must be documented separately | Make sure both parties’ consent is on record |
What the agent should bring
The agent needs the original POA, their own ID, and whatever the track itself requires. Those requirements are not removed by having a POA: the registry still wants the underlying marriage documents. Our guides on documents needed for marriage registration in the UAE and documents required for court marriage list what to prepare. Requirements vary by nationality and religion, so check them against your own case.
Our perspective
We built Harris & Charms after going through UAE marriage bureaucracy ourselves, and the pattern we see with proxy documents is consistent. Couples rarely fail because the law is unclear. They fail because a document was drafted before anyone checked which track and which registry it was for.
Our advice is to work backwards. Start from the appointment and the counter you will stand at, then ask what that counter wants to see. A power of attorney is a tool for that one counter, not a general-purpose paper. When the person you need to represent you is abroad, we would rather you spend an extra day on the wording than an extra month on a rejected document.
We also encourage couples to treat consent as the center of the process. The POA moves paper. It never replaces the two of you agreeing to marry, and a well-run registration keeps that visible.

FAQ
Can I marry in the UAE without being there if I give someone power of attorney?
It depends on the registration track and the registry. The law allows representation by a proxy, but the contract still needs documented consent from both parties, and some registries expect the couple to attend. Ask the court or civil registry about your case before drafting.
Can a general power of attorney be used for marriage?
Usually not. UAE registries ask for a special power of attorney that is limited to marriage and names the intended spouse and the process. A general mandate is often rejected at the counter because it lacks that specificity.
How long is a marriage power of attorney valid in the UAE?
It must carry a specific expiry date, and that date cannot be more than three years after issuance. For a wedding, a much shorter period with a safety margin is usually the better choice. If the date passes before the appointment, you will need a new document.
How much does a marriage power of attorney cost?
Fees depend on the emirate and the notary channel. A figure often quoted for marriage POAs is AED 100 per year of validity, but check the current fee with the notary or justice department before you go. Any translation or attestation needed for foreign documents is extra.
What if my father, the Wali, lives abroad?
He can appoint a proxy by power of attorney to give consent at the court on his behalf. If he signs outside the UAE, the document needs notarization, foreign ministry authentication and UAE embassy attestation before it is accepted here. Start early, because attestation can take longer than expected.
