Divorce Certificate Attestation in the UAE: Steps and Fees

Applicant checks legalization seals on divorce judgment

To attest a divorce certificate in the UAE, you submit the original, final court document to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) with your ID papers and pay the attestation fee. If the divorce was granted abroad, the document must first be attested in the country that issued it, then by the UAE Embassy or Consulate there. MoFA in the UAE gives the final seal. The steps are simple on paper. The delays come from the details: the wrong type of document, a laminated copy, a missing link in the chain.

This guide walks through who needs attestation, what to prepare, how the process differs for UAE-issued and foreign-issued certificates, and where applications get stuck. It comes from our daily work with couples and individuals who handle personal status paperwork in the UAE, including marriage certificate attestation.

TL;DR

  • Attestation confirms that the signatures and seals on your divorce document are genuine. It does not review the divorce itself.

  • A UAE-issued certificate goes through MoFA. A foreign one must be attested in the issuing country, then at the UAE Embassy or Consulate there, then by MoFA in the UAE.

  • MoFA publishes a fee of AED 150 for an individual status document such as a divorce certificate. Check the current amount on its site before you pay.

  • MoFA rejects laminated documents. If yours is laminated, ask the court for a fresh original before you start.

  • You need a final, stamped judgment, not a court filing or a case summary.

What attestation does, and what it does not

Attestation is a chain of verification. Each authority confirms the signature and seal of the one before it. At the end of the chain, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms that the document can be accepted as authentic by other UAE bodies or by a foreign government.

It helps to separate three things people often mix up:

  • The divorce certificate or judgment. This is issued by a court, a notary or a religious authority, depending on the country and the type of marriage.

  • Attestation. This is verification of the document’s signatures and seals. It does not change what the document says.

  • Translation. If the document is not in Arabic or English, a certified legal translation is usually needed as well. We cover that below.

The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department makes the point that the legal weight of these documents for use abroad rests on completing the MoFA attestation chain. Without that last seal, a perfectly valid court judgment may be refused by an embassy or a foreign court.

When you actually need it

Not every divorced person in the UAE needs to attest a certificate. You usually need it in one of these situations.

You want to remarry in the UAE

If you were previously married, the registrar or court will ask for proof that the earlier marriage ended. A final divorce judgment is the standard proof. If it came from another country, it generally has to be legalized before the UAE accepts it. Our guide to court marriage requirements in the UAE lists what couples bring when one or both partners are divorced.

You are updating residency or family status

Proof of divorce is routinely requested when your family status changes on a residency file. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) and other bodies may ask for a final, notarized divorce judgment or certificate. This comes up for sponsors who need to remove a spouse from a visa and for women who hold residency under a former spouse and need to change sponsor.

You need to use a UAE divorce abroad

If you divorced in the UAE and must show it to a foreign embassy, a foreign court or an employer overseas, the UAE certificate typically needs MoFA attestation, and often the embassy of the destination country asks for its own legalization afterward.

You need to use a foreign divorce in the UAE

This is the most common case among expats. A divorce granted in the UK, India, the Philippines or elsewhere has to be legalized in its country of origin before the UAE will treat it as proof. Requirements vary by country, so ask the receiving UAE body what it needs before you start.

Documents to prepare

The exact list depends on the channel you use and whether the document is UAE-issued. Applicants most often prepare the following:

  1. The original divorce certificate or final judgment. A photocopy is not enough. It must be unlaminated.

  2. A copy of your passport and, for residents, your UAE residence visa.

  3. Your Emirates ID, for applications made through UAE digital channels.

  4. Passport-size photographs, which some service centers ask for.

  5. An authorization letter, if someone else submits the document for you.

  6. A certified legal translation, if the document is in a language other than Arabic or English.

Check the final list with the channel you use. Requirements can change, and a missing item sends you back to the start.

Step by step: a divorce issued in the UAE

For a divorce granted by a UAE court, the route is shorter because the whole chain sits inside the country.

  1. Get the final document from the court. Confirm that it is the final judgment or certificate, with the court’s stamp and signature, not an interim order or a filing receipt. In Abu Dhabi, the Judicial Department’s civil family court handles civil marriages and no-fault divorces for non-Muslims, and it is the issuing authority for those cases.

  2. Check the document’s condition. No lamination, no staples removed or damage to seals, and no handwritten changes.

  3. Submit it for MoFA attestation. MoFA lists several channels: its website, its smart mobile app, and UAE embassies and consulates abroad. Many UAE-issued documents can now be attested digitally with a QR code.

  4. Pay the fee. MoFA publishes AED 150 for an individual status document such as a divorce certificate. Confirm the figure on its site on the day you apply.

  5. Collect or download the attested document. Digital attestations can be quick during official working hours, while physical submissions through courier or service centers take longer.

If you then need the document accepted in another country, ask that country’s embassy in the UAE whether it requires its own legalization step on top of MoFA.

Step by step: a divorce issued abroad

The chain for a foreign divorce has three links, and the order matters.

  1. Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the issuing country. The foreign ministry, or the authority it designates, attests the court’s signature and seal. In some countries, the document first needs a notary or a home office authentication.

  2. UAE Embassy or Consulate in that country. The mission authenticates the foreign ministry’s attestation.

  3. UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. After the document arrives in the UAE, MoFA attests it, which completes the chain.

The order cannot be reversed. If you skip the embassy step and go straight to MoFA in the UAE, the application will be refused.

Three practical points save weeks:

  • Keep the original moving. Most embassies want the original, not a scan. Courier it with tracking and insure it if you can. Our guide to UK marriage certificate attestation in the UAE explains how couples handle original-by-courier chains, and the logic is the same for divorce documents.

  • Ask for the right document at source. A divorce “decree nisi” or an interim order is not final in many systems. You need the final decree or its equivalent, such as a decree absolute.

  • Translate last, not first. If a translation is needed, confirm with the receiving authority whether the original or the translation gets attested, and in what order.

Fees and timing

The one fee we can point to with confidence is MoFA’s published AED 150 for attesting an individual status document such as a divorce certificate. Everything else depends on your situation:

Cost or time element

What to expect

MoFA attestation fee

AED 150 for an individual status document, per MoFA’s published information

Digital MoFA attestation of a UAE-issued document

Can be completed within hours during working hours, according to MoFA

Physical submission with courier

Typically 1 to 3 business days at MoFA, plus courier time

Foreign divorce chain

Depends on the issuing country and the UAE mission there; plan for weeks, not days

Embassy or consulate fees abroad

Set by each mission and the foreign ministry, so check them directly

Legal translation

Priced by the translation provider, usually per page

Some third-party sites quote 2 to 4 weeks for the full process. That is realistic when a foreign step is involved and not when a UAE-issued document goes through the digital channel. Your timeline depends on how many links your chain has.

Mistakes that get applications rejected

Lamination

MoFA does not accept laminated documents. People laminate certificates to protect them, and then find that the document cannot be attested. If yours is laminated, ask the issuing court for a fresh original. Do this first, because it can take longer than the attestation itself.

Submitting a court filing instead of a final judgment

For remarriage and for visa updates, the receiving authority wants the final, stamped judgment. A case number, a hearing summary or an interim order will not do.

Wrong order in a foreign chain

The sequence is issuing country foreign ministry, then UAE mission, then UAE MoFA. A step done out of order is usually not repaired. You start that link again.

Correct order for foreign divorce attestation

Mismatched names

If the name on the divorce certificate differs from your passport, even by spelling or order, expect questions. Fix the mismatch at source, or ask your embassy about the right supporting document, before you submit.

Missing the legal deadline to register

Under the UAE Personal Status Law (Federal Decree-Law No. 41 of 2024), the husband is responsible for documenting a divorce within 15 days of it taking place. Failure can bring legal consequences, including financial liability. If you are not sure whether a divorce was properly documented, speak with a licensed UAE family lawyer before you pay for attestation.

Digital certificates: are they accepted?

The UAE has moved a lot of personal status paperwork online. Electronic documents with verifiable digital signatures or QR codes are increasingly accepted, provided they can be verified through official government systems. In practice, this means two things for you:

  • Keep the digital original file and the QR code intact. A screenshot of a PDF is not the same as the verified file.

  • Ask the receiving authority whether it accepts the electronic version or wants a printed original with a wet stamp. Foreign embassies and courts differ.

Our perspective

Most of the divorce-related attestation questions we see have little to do with divorce. They come from people who need to move on with something else: a new marriage, a spouse’s visa, a change of sponsor, a move abroad. The document is a blocker, and the person is usually already stressed.

Our perspective — overview diagram

That shapes how we think about it. First, work backward from the deadline. Know which authority will receive the document and ask what it wants before you begin. Second, protect the original. Lamination, folding and photocopy-only shortcuts cause more rejections than anything else. Third, do not guess about a foreign chain. Each country has its own steps, and a single call to the embassy saves weeks.

We built our business on getting through UAE marriage paperwork ourselves, so we know how disheartening a rejected file feels. If your case involves a marriage certificate as well as a divorce, treat them as one project. The registrar looking at your new marriage will want both in order.

If you are remarrying: put the paperwork in the right order

Many of our clients attest a divorce certificate because they are about to marry again. A tidy order of operations prevents delays on the wedding date:

  1. Confirm that your divorce judgment is final and in good condition.

  2. Complete the attestation chain for the divorce document.

  3. Get a legal translation if needed.

  4. Gather the rest of the marriage file, including passports, visas and, for some nationalities, a certificate of no impediment.

  5. Book the marriage appointment only after the divorce paperwork is complete.

After the wedding, you will probably need the new marriage certificate attested too, for family visas, embassy registration or a status change. Our guides to MoFA attestation of a marriage certificate, marriage certificate attestation in Dubai and changing your status after marriage in the UAE cover the next steps.

How Harris & Charms can help

We help couples and individuals with UAE marriage documentation, including marriage certificate attestation, legal translation and related visa and family-visa paperwork. If you are remarrying and want one team to keep the sequence of documents on track, start from our marriage certificate attestation page and tell us what you have in hand. We will tell you what is missing before you pay for the wrong step. Attestation, translation and visa services are billed separately from wedding packages, and we do not publish a fixed price for them because it depends on the documents and the route.

FAQ

How long does divorce certificate attestation take in the UAE?

For a UAE-issued certificate submitted digitally to MoFA, the attestation can be finished within hours on a working day. A physical submission with courier usually takes a few business days. A foreign divorce takes much longer, because it must pass through the issuing country’s ministry and the UAE mission there before reaching MoFA.

Can I attest a laminated divorce certificate?

No. MoFA rejects laminated documents. You will need to request a fresh original from the court or authority that issued it, then start the process with that copy.

Do I need to attest a UAE divorce certificate to remarry in the UAE?

Not always. A UAE court’s final divorce judgment is often accepted by UAE authorities for remarriage, but requirements depend on the authority and on your nationality. Ask the registrar or court handling your new marriage what it needs. Attestation is more commonly needed when the document is going abroad.

What is the MoFA fee for attesting a divorce certificate?

MoFA publishes a fee of AED 150 for attesting an individual status document such as a divorce certificate. Fees can change, so confirm the current amount on the ministry’s website or app before you apply. Embassy, translation and courier costs are separate.

Can someone else submit my divorce certificate for attestation?

Yes, in most cases, with an authorization letter and copies of your identification. The representative should bring the original document. Check with the channel you use, since some require extra identification.
