Lebanese Marriage Certificate Attestation in the UAE

Marriage certificate prepared for attestation

A Lebanese marriage certificate is accepted in the UAE only after it has passed a chain of authentications: first in Lebanon, then by the UAE. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) does not judge the marriage itself. It confirms the seal and signature of the authority that already vouched for your certificate. If one link in that chain is missing, the file is rejected. This guide walks through the chain in order, lists what to prepare, and shows where couples usually lose weeks.

TL;DR

  • A certificate issued outside the UAE must be attested by the issuing country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then by a UAE Embassy or Consulate in that country, before UAE authorities accept it.

  • MoFA attests marriage certificates as individual-affairs documents. The published fee for this category is AED 150, and the final amount is shown before you pay.

  • Submit an original in Arabic or English, or an original with a legally certified translation. Never laminate it.

  • Missing earlier attestations and laminated paper are the two most common reasons for rejection.

  • Someone else can submit the file on your behalf, which helps if you cannot travel to Lebanon.

What attestation actually does for a Lebanese certificate

Attestation is a relay of trust. Your marriage was recorded by a Lebanese authority, such as a religious court or the civil status registry, depending on how you married. The UAE cannot verify that authority’s stamp directly. So each official body in the chain confirms the signature of the one before it, until a UAE body can confirm the last one.

This is why the UAE MoFA process is about authenticating the issuing authority’s seal and signature. It is not a ruling on whether your marriage is valid. In practice, that means a Lebanese certificate must finish Lebanon’s own authentication chain before any UAE office will attest it.

The UAE side is also split by where the document came from. The MoFA service page makes a distinction: the digital attestation route is meant for eligible UAE-issued digital documents, while a document issued outside the UAE follows the route through a UAE mission abroad. A Lebanese certificate falls in the second group, even if you now live in Dubai.

Lebanese certificate authentication stages to UAE MoFA

The attestation chain, step by step

The order matters. Doing a later step first usually means redoing it.

  1. Get the right original in Lebanon. Request a recent copy of your marriage certificate or marriage contract from the authority that registered it. Ask for the original, not a photocopy. If you married in a religious court, the court copy is the starting point. If the marriage was registered with the civil status department, you may also need a civil status extract. Rules differ by case, so confirm what the issuing office will stamp.

  2. Authenticate it with the relevant Lebanese authorities. Before it reaches the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the document normally needs to be certified by the competent body that issued or registered it. This is the step the UAE calls prior authentication by the appropriate governing bodies.

  3. Attestation by Lebanon’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Lebanese ministry attests the document in Beirut. This is the issuing country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stage that UAE rules require.

  4. Attestation by the UAE Embassy in Lebanon. The UAE mission in Beirut then attests the document. This is the stage that gives the UAE a verified link to the Lebanese seal.

  5. Attestation by UAE MoFA. Once the document is in the UAE, MoFA completes the chain. You can apply through the MoFA website or its application. MoFA states that a courier provider may take up to 7 business days for documents issued outside the UAE.

  6. Translation, if needed. If the certificate is in a language other than Arabic or English, add a legally certified translation. Our guide to UAE marriage certificate translation explains what makes a translation acceptable.

A note on the Lebanese consulate in the UAE: Lebanese citizens living here often deal with their consulate for civil status matters, and the consulate publishes its own list of requirements, including an original local marriage certificate that has been duly attested. That is a different purpose from getting your Lebanese certificate recognized by UAE authorities. Check with the consulate which of the two you need, because many couples need both.

Documents to prepare before you start

Gather everything in one folder before sending anything. These are the items most files need.

Item

Why it is needed

Watch out for

Original marriage certificate or contract

MoFA works from originals, digital documents or documents with a QR code

A scan or photocopy will not do for the paper route

Proof of earlier Lebanese authentication

The UAE requires prior authentication by the governing bodies

Stamps must be legible and in the right order

Certified translation (if not Arabic or English)

MoFA accepts only Arabic, English, or a legally certified translation

Translate from the original, not from a copy

Passport copies of both spouses

Identifies the applicants

Names must match the certificate spelling

Emirates ID, if resident

Used for the UAE application

Keep the file number or ID handy

Names and spelling

Lebanese records are written in Arabic, and English transliteration can vary between passports, certificates and translations. A spelling that differs by one letter can trigger questions later at the visa or residency stage. Decide on one spelling, match your passport, and ask the translator to follow it.

Lamination and condition

The UAE rules are plain: the document must not be laminated. If your certificate was laminated for protection, ask the issuing authority for a fresh original. Staples, tears or handwriting added after issue also cause trouble. Store the paper flat in a folder.

Cost and timing

The UAE MoFA FAQ states that attestation of an individual-affairs document costs AED 150. The MoFA service page adds that the final amount depends on the number of documents, the completion option you choose, which attestations are included, and whether the document is personal or commercial. The amount is shown before payment, so you can see it before confirming.

For documents issued outside the UAE, MoFA says courier-provider processing may take up to 7 business days. That covers the UAE side only. The time in Lebanon depends on how quickly the issuing office, the Lebanese ministry and the UAE Embassy in Beirut handle your file, and on whether you or a representative can be present.

Other costs that sit outside the AED 150 fee:

  • Fees charged by Lebanese authorities and the UAE Embassy in Beirut. These are set by those offices, so ask each for its current schedule.

  • Courier costs to send the original between Lebanon and the UAE.

  • Certified translation, if needed.

  • Service fees if you hire someone to handle the process.

Who can submit the documents for you

You do not have to be in Lebanon, and you do not always have to appear in person in the UAE. The MoFA FAQ says documents may be submitted by another person on the applicant’s behalf. In Lebanon, an authorized representative or a family member with the right paperwork can often collect and carry the certificate through the Lebanese offices. Ask each office what authorization it accepts, as some want a written power of attorney and others only an ID copy.

If you do use a representative, keep the original certificate in a single sealed envelope and track the courier. Originals are the one thing you cannot reproduce quickly.

Mistakes that delay or sink a file

Skipping the Lebanese stage. The most common error is sending a Lebanese certificate straight to MoFA in the UAE. MoFA expects the earlier attestations to be done. A file without them is rejected.

Attesting a copy. A certified copy may be fine for some purposes, but the UAE route asks for originals, digital documents or documents with a QR code. Confirm what type you hold before paying for any step.

Lamination. Already covered, but it bears repeating, because it is easy to miss on a certificate that has been in a wallet for years.

No translation. A certificate in French or in a mix of languages needs a legally certified translation. Do the translation once the attestation order is clear, and keep it attached to the original.

Attesting too early. If you attest a certificate and then need an updated version, for example a recent civil status extract, the older one may not be accepted. Order the document close to the moment you start the chain.

Mixing up MoFA and embassy routes. Couples sometimes pay for an embassy stage when the receiving UAE office actually needed only a MoFA stamp, or the reverse. Our comparison of MOFA vs embassy attestation shows which applies when. If a rejection has already happened, this guide to avoiding MoFA rejection lists what to check.

Do you need it for a UAE visa or residency?

Not always, and it depends on the transaction. The UAE Government’s page on residence visas for the families of expatriate employees says a spouse may be sponsored, subject to the sponsor meeting the applicable salary requirement. That page does not say attestation is required in every case, so do not assume it for every application.

Where it does matter: when renewing a residence permit and bringing a spouse, the UAE Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) service listing expressly asks for an attested marriage contract or a marriage-continuity certificate. In practice, if you plan to sponsor your spouse, expect to need the attested certificate at some point, and have it ready before the application date.

Two timing tips. First, begin attestation before your spouse arrives or before the sponsorship application, because the Lebanon stages are the slow part. Second, ask the receiving office, for example the typing center or the immigration channel you use, what exact version it wants. Our guide to marriage certificate immigration in the UAE covers the spouse sponsorship side in detail.

If you need a faster path on the UAE side once the Lebanese stamps are in place, we explain how urgent MoFA attestation in 1 to 3 days works. For a city-specific walkthrough, see the Dubai attestation guide and the overall marriage attestation process. If your certificate comes from another country, our UK certificate guide shows the same logic with a courier-based flow.

Our perspective

We see the same pattern again and again. Couples treat attestation as a stamp to collect at the end, when it is really a sequence that starts in the country where you married. The Lebanese part is not complicated, but it is unforgiving about order, and every mistake costs a courier round trip.

We also learned this first hand. Our founders went through UAE marriage paperwork themselves, and the lesson was that most delays come from small things nobody warned them about: a laminated page, a name spelled two ways, a document attested before it was needed. That is why we ask for the original and the passports first, map the chain with you, and only then start any step.

Our advice: decide what the receiving UAE office actually needs, order a fresh original, and keep one folder for everything. If you have a rejection already, do not pay for the same step twice. Find out which link was missing.

How we can help

We handle marriage certificate attestation for couples and individuals in the UAE, and we also support the surrounding steps, such as legal translation, family visa paperwork and civil or Islamic marriage registration. We do not publish a price for attestation, because it depends on the document, the country and the route, so we quote after seeing your certificate.

FAQ

Does UAE MoFA attest a Lebanese marriage certificate?

Yes, MoFA lists marriage certificates among the individual-affairs documents it attests. For a certificate issued in Lebanon, the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UAE Embassy in Lebanon must attest it first. MoFA then confirms the last stamp in the chain.

How much does it cost to attest a marriage certificate in the UAE?

The MoFA FAQ gives AED 150 for individual-affairs documents. The final amount depends on document count, completion option and included attestations, and it is shown before you pay. Lebanese fees, embassy fees, courier and translation are charged separately.

How long does the process take?

MoFA says courier-provider processing for documents issued outside the UAE may take up to 7 business days. The Lebanese stages add time, and the total depends on how quickly each office handles your file. Start early if you have a visa or renewal date.

Is marriage certificate attestation required for a UAE visa?

Not for every application. Sponsoring a spouse is allowed for eligible expatriate residents, and the government page on this does not make attestation a blanket requirement. However, renewing a residence permit when bringing a spouse expressly asks for an attested marriage contract or a marriage-continuity certificate.

Can someone else submit my documents?

Yes. The MoFA FAQ says documents may be submitted by another person on the applicant’s behalf. In Lebanon, confirm which authorization each office accepts before you hand over the original.
